Screen printing came from the idea of using stencils to transfer images and artwork onto substrates such a fabric and paper. This stencilling method dates back thousands of years to China, closely followed by Japan who jazzed it up and created newer methods. It was largely introduced to the Western world in the late 18th century.
Did you know?!
Japan used to use banana leaves as their form of a 'screen', cutting holes and forcing ink through them to transfer designs onto textiles (most of which was clothing).
The squeegee was introduced in the early 1900's as a way of pushing the ink through the mesh of a screen, and from there photo-imaged stencils were introduced which revolutionised the commercial screen printing industry.
When Andy Warhol got his hands on a squeegee, screen printing took off as a popular contemporary artistic technique. If you haven't heard of the name Andy Warhol, chances are you have still seen his artwork. He created that epic colourful piece of Marilyn Monroe, and also the Campbells Soup Tin.
A few other popular artists from back in the day that are famous for their screen prints are:
Micheal Caza
Andy Warhol
Corita Kent (or Sister Mary Corita)
Peter Blake
Roger Rauschenberg
These are just a few of my favourites that I personally feel are part of the OG's! I'd love to hear who your inspiration comes from in the comments below...
Screen printing has come so far since the 60's, and some of the works created now are just incredible. There is so much potential in this artistic method, and although we currently only print on apparel at The Print Shack, I have every intention of expanding my knowledge with printing on different mediums! Did someone say glass??
